Vermont is the only state from New York to Maine that still taxes general aviation aircraft sales, though parts, machinery, and equipment installed in any aircraft are permanently exempt. Financing an aircraft in Vermont, done right.
Vermont's general aviation community is small but its newest aviation story is a big one: Beta Technologies, based at Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport, opened the nation's first large-scale electric aircraft manufacturing facility in 2023 and went public in a multi-billion-dollar IPO in 2026. The rest of the state's aviation activity is classic New England general aviation, spread across small fields statewide.

Vermont is the exception in New England. Vermont remains the only state from New York to Maine that still taxes the sale of general aviation aircraft; there is no purchase exemption for private buyers. Vermont's standard sales and use tax rate of 6 percent applies to most GA aircraft sales. The one carve-out is for aircraft sold to businesses holding themselves out to the public as engaged in air commerce, meaning commercial carriage of persons or property for hire, which are exempt.
Parts and equipment are permanently exempt, on any aircraft. Since 2017, Vermont has permanently exempted parts, machinery, and equipment installed in any aircraft from sales and use tax, with the sunset provision that used to require periodic legislative renewal repealed. That exemption applies regardless of whether the aircraft itself qualifies for the air-commerce exemption.

Federal bonus depreciation is only half the tax picture; how Vermont treats the deduction is the other half. Vermont has historically limited conformity to federal bonus depreciation, reducing the state-level benefit. The bonus depreciation guide carries the full state-by-state conformity breakdown and the December 31 placed-in-service mechanics. Read it alongside this page before you commit to a closing date.
The tax treatment above is specific to this state, but if you are comparing markets, financing across state lines, or want the full fly-away exemption rules in one place, see our aircraft sales tax by state guide for the state-by-state breakdown.
The two numbers every Vermont business buyer runs first: the monthly payment at today's rate, and what 100 percent bonus depreciation could be worth in year one. Both in one place, with the state layer linked below.
