South Dakota replaces sales tax on aircraft with a one-time 4 percent registration tax paid only once per aircraft, and has no personal or corporate income tax. Financing an aircraft in South Dakota, done right.
General aviation supports more than $1 billion in annual economic output and about 5,000 jobs in South Dakota, per a 2023 PwC study, across the state's 70 public-use airports serving roughly 2,689 pilots and 2,025 registered aircraft.
The rates above are our live national rates; South Dakota residency neither helps nor hurts your pricing. What is South Dakota specific is the tax picture below, where the state's one-time registration tax and lack of any state income tax are the headline.
General sales tax doesn't apply to aircraft. South Dakota doesn't apply its general sales tax, currently 4.2 percent statewide, to aircraft. Instead, aircraft required to be registered in the state owe a separate original registration tax under South Dakota Codified Law Chapter 50-11, at 4 percent of the purchase price or fair market value, reduced to 3 percent for aircraft used exclusively for agricultural aerial application.
It's a one-time tax, not a recurring one. This registration tax is a one-time charge per aircraft: once it's been paid, it doesn't have to be paid again no matter how many times the aircraft is later resold, per the SD DOT Office of Aeronautics Services. Nonresidents generally have 30 days from when an aircraft not previously registered in South Dakota begins operating in the state before tax and registration are due, and new SD residents get credit if they already paid an equal or greater tax rate in their prior state, with some exceptions.
This is orientation, not advice; South Dakota's registration-tax reciprocity and nonresident operating rules are fact specific. Engage a South Dakota aviation tax advisor before closing.
Federal bonus depreciation is only half the tax picture, but in South Dakota, there's no state half to worry about: South Dakota has no state personal income tax and no general corporate income tax, so the full federal bonus depreciation benefit flows through with no state-level addback for most buyers. The bonus depreciation guide carries the full state-by-state conformity breakdown and the December 31 placed-in-service mechanics. Confirm your specific entity structure with a CPA before you commit to a closing date.
The tax treatment above is specific to this state, but if you are comparing markets, financing across state lines, or want the full fly-away exemption rules in one place, see our aircraft sales tax by state guide for the state-by-state breakdown.
The two numbers every South Dakota business buyer runs first: the monthly payment at today's rate, and what 100 percent bonus depreciation could be worth in year one. Both in one place, with the state layer linked below.
