Indiana taxes most aircraft purchases at a flat 7 percent statewide rate, with a narrow exemption for nonresident buyers who base the aircraft elsewhere. Financing an aircraft in Indiana, done right.
Indiana's aviation economy centers on Indianapolis, where Rolls-Royce Corporation designs, builds, and supports military and commercial aircraft engines and recently announced a 1 billion dollar Indiana investment with plans to add 100 engineers. LIFT Academy, a large flight school owned by Republic Airways, trains pilots on a fleet of roughly 46 aircraft with a direct pipeline into airline hiring, and Purdue University's School of Aviation and Transportation Technology runs one of the larger collegiate aviation programs in the Midwest.
The rates above are our live national rates; Indiana residency neither helps nor hurts your pricing. What is Indiana specific is the tax picture below, where the state's flat rate and narrow exemptions change the math.
There's no local add-on, and no general private-sale exemption. Indiana taxes aircraft purchases at a flat 7 percent state rate with no county or city add-ons anywhere in the state. Indiana regulation treats isolated or occasional aircraft sales as taxable retail transactions, so buying from a private party does not avoid the tax. A narrower exemption applies when a nonresident buyer removes the aircraft from Indiana within 30 days and bases and registers it outside the state; a 2026 law change tightened enforcement against using out-of-state entities to disguise a resident purchase as a nonresident one.
Property tax is replaced by an annual state excise tax. Indiana does not assess local ad valorem property tax on aircraft; instead, owners pay an annual Aircraft License Excise Tax tied to the aircraft's age, class, and certificated landing weight, which by statute stands in lieu of the property tax otherwise levied for state or local purposes.
This is orientation, not advice; Indiana aviation tax outcomes are fact specific and depend on residency, how the sale is structured, and how the aircraft is based. Engage an Indiana aviation tax advisor before closing.
Federal bonus depreciation is only half the tax picture; how Indiana treats the deduction is the other half, and Indiana does not conform to federal bonus depreciation. The federal deduction must be added back and the aircraft depreciated on Indiana's own schedule instead. The bonus depreciation guide carries the full state-by-state conformity breakdown and the December 31 placed-in-service mechanics. Read it alongside this page before you commit to a closing date.
The tax treatment above is specific to this state, but if you are comparing markets, financing across state lines, or want the full fly-away exemption rules in one place, see our aircraft sales tax by state guide for the state-by-state breakdown.
The two numbers every Indiana business buyer runs first: the monthly payment at today's rate, and what 100 percent bonus depreciation could be worth in year one. Both in one place, with the state layer linked below.
