Aircraft Buying Insights: Why You Might Need a Broker

Aircraft Buying Insights: Why You Might Need a Broker.

Welcome to the third edition of “Clearance to Fly.” I’m Keller Laseter, your go-to pilot and aircraft finance expert, here to break down whether you really need an aircraft broker for your big purchase. Trust me, I’ve been around the hangar a time or two, so let’s cut through the turbulence and get straight to it.

Let me tell you first, as someone who’s been on both sides of the equation – as a pilot and in the financing world – I’ve seen firsthand how much smoother things go when there’s a broker involved. They speak the language of aviation and finance, bridging the gap between your aviation dreams and the nitty-gritty financial realities.

If you’re new to the aircraft buying game, listen up. You absolutely need a broker, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. The aviation market is as complex as a jet engine, and without the right expertise, you might find yourself in a spin before you even take off. A good broker is like your co-pilot, guiding you through the process and making sure you don’t crash and burn financially.

Now, for those of you who’ve dipped your toes in the water once or twice before – maybe you’ve bought a plane or two – you’re not off the hook either. Sure, you might think you’ve got this whole aircraft purchasing thing down, but let me tell you, the market changes faster than the weather in Florida during summer. A broker can still bring a lot to the table, keeping you updated on market trends, helping you navigate the paperwork jungle, and potentially saving you from making a costly mistake.

But hey, I get it. Some of you out there are seasoned professionals. If you’ve been through three or more aircraft transactions, you might be thinking you can fly solo on this one. And you know what? You might be right. But here’s the kicker – if you’re eyeing a turboprop or jet, do yourself a favor and call a broker. These high-performance aircraft come with their own set of complexities, and having an expert in your corner can make all the difference.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “But what about the cost?” Well, let me break it down for you. Yes, using a broker cost money but trust me, it’s worth every penny. Think of it as an investment in your peace of mind. These folks have insider knowledge that can save you time, cash, and a whole lot of headaches in the long run. A good friend of mine, Evan Seitz from Seitz Aviation says “the average cost of broker services typically ranges around 4% of the aircraft’s selling price. However, rates can vary based on the specific value of the aircraft and the complexity of the transaction. It’s important to consider this investment as part of securing expert guidance and support throughout the purchasing process, ensuring you make informed decisions every step of the way.”

Brokers aren’t just there to help you find the right aircraft – they’re your secret weapon in negotiations. They know the market inside and out, which means they can help you get the best deal possible. Plus, they’ve got connections that would make a social media influencer jealous. Need a pre-purchase inspection? They know a guy. Looking for the best maintenance facility? They’ve got you covered.

But here’s where it gets really interesting. Brokers often have partnerships with finance companies like us at FLYING Finance. That means they can help streamline the whole purchasing process, from finding your dream aircraft to securing the financing to make it happen. It’s like a one-stop shop for all your aircraft buying needs.

Now, I’m not saying brokers are miracle workers (although some of them come pretty close). But they do bring a level of expertise and professionalism to the table that’s hard to match. They can help you avoid common pitfalls, navigate complex regulations, and even uncover hidden gems in the market that you might not find on your own. Seitz says “Without professional representation, sellers may take advantage of unsuspecting buyers, concealing critical information such as damage history, existing liens, and other significant issues related to the aircraft.”

So, whether you’re a first-time buyer or a seasoned pro looking at that new jet, consider bringing a broker on board. They’re not just middlemen – they’re your advocates, your advisors, and sometimes, your sanity-savers in the wild world of aircraft transactions.

Remember, at the end of the day, buying an aircraft is a big deal. It’s not like picking up a new car or even a house. There are so many moving parts (literally and figuratively) that having an expert guide can make all the difference between a smooth flight and a bumpy ride.

So there you have it.. The straight talk on who needs an aircraft broker. Whether you decide to go it alone or bring in the pros, just remember – we’re all in this together, trying to make our aviation dreams take flight. Until next time, keep your eyes on the horizon and your mind on safety.
